What is FAS?
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) is caused by prenatal exposure to alcohol. It is the leading cause of preventable birth defects. In all cases, the brain has been damaged. For those affected, FAS presents a lifetime of challenges. FAS is preventable. If a pregnant woman does not drink, her child will not be at risk for FAS. Spouses, partners, family, and friends can all help to prevent FAS by informing others of the risks associated with drinking during pregnancy. We can all encourage and support women to remain alcohol-free during pregnancy.

I've just begun to need information on FAS, where do I start?
Start here by taking a look at the resources we have listed here. Reach out to others for information and support. Contact any local organizations that may provide resources on FAS (FAS support groups, health centers, doctors, diagnostic centers, special needs adoption groups, child development centres etc.). Plan to attend workshops on FAS. Also check out the
LINKS section of this website. It will direct you to other FAS organizations and websites

Our organization is having a workshop. We would like to display some materials, can you help us?
We’d love to be able to help out. Please give us a call to see what we can arrange. We can provide catalogues. In some cases, we may also be able to provide a package of materials for you to display.

How do you price your resources?
We try to provide competitive pricing but our price must always reflect what our suppliers charge us and our costs to provide it to you. We check our prices every summer and adjust them accordingly. We cannot sell for less than our cost. So…in many cases, our prices will be equivalent or slightly less than you could get them elsewhere. However, in rare cases, our price may be higher than you could get it from the supplier because we could not get a discount and still wanted to offer you the option of buying this item from us. You will have to decide whether the convenience of ordering from one place outweighs the difference.

Most of the books you offer are paperback copies, why is this?
We are trying to keep our costs as reasonable as possible so we offer what we think the majority of people will want. This means that we purchase the less expensive paperback copy if it is available. Some books only come in hardcover so then we don’t have any other option except to offer the hardcover copy.

There are some resources where you’ve listed web addresses so we can get them free, why is this? www.bced.gov.bc.ca/specialed/fas/contents.htm
It would not be fair to charge you for something that you can get for free without letting you know about it. In some cases, individuals may wish to purchase a print copy and so we offer that for sale. This option is also important for people who do not have access to computers and printers.

Why have you only offered videos with public performance rights?
Information on FAS is something that people usually want to share. In order to respect copyright laws regarding viewing of videos, we have made a decision to only stock copies with Public Performance Rights. Still, you do need to make sure that you read the information provided on the video, its cover, and its case. These usually tell you what is permitted by the producer.

I have seen many resources on FAS but they aren’t all listed in the FAS Bookshelf. Why not?
We know that there are many good resources that are not listed here. However, we will be adding more items each summer so there's a good chance that what you want may appear later. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, we have not yet been able to seek out and make distribution arrangements for many of the other excellent resources that we wish we could offer immediately.

Some resources listed do not have a specific FAS focus. Why are they listed here?
While some of the resources may not have an exclusive FAS focus, they are topics which are often relevant to some individuals with FAS. We are not recommending any of the resources but we are trying to provide you, our clientele, with a wide variety of resources so you will not have to search to find them. Although you may not wish to purchase, you will, at least, become aware of some of the resources for the related topics.

Sometimes when I call your telephone number, I am asked to leave a message. Why is this?
We are a new business committed to offering you competitive pricing and quality service. So… to keep your costs and our costs as low as possible, we do not yet have a full-time employee designated to answer the phone. We ask that you do leave a message or send us an e-mail and we will respond … usually within a few hours but definitely within a day.
